Random Scene from Chapter One
“What the hell?” she muttered as she threw open the door.
“Sign here, please.” An electronic board was thrust at her before she could think, she just reacted and signed. That was not her signature. Those stupid things, she never could write worth a damn on them. He took his pad back, dropped the huge box, and mumbled, “Have a good day.”
Sighing, she leaned down to pick up the box. It felt like deadweight. She grumbled, “I was having a perfectly good day until you dropped a box the size of Africa on my doorstep.”
Kicking the box through the door, she finally got it over the doorstep and hoped whatever it was held up to her abuse. Once again, her scissors weren’t anywhere within reach. So she grabbed a kitchen knife off the counter. There was no return address. How strange. As soon as the box was opened and its contents revealed, she dropped the knife and began screaming.

Josh was just leaving his sister’s apartment when he heard the screams. He didn’t stop to analyze the situation, but took off at a dead run to find out what was causing the commotion. Locating the source of the high pitched squeals shouldn’t prove too difficult, seeing as how the woman was still screaming bloody murder. Running on acute instinct and a heavy dose of adrenaline, he barreled up the stairs.
He saw an open door and rushed for it. He was surprised to see a beautiful, tall redhead bent over what appeared to be a box. The same redhead he had earlier saved from mud jeopardy, as a matter of fact. Intensely aware of the electric current touching her had sparked earlier, he was a little wary to jump into the situation. However, by the sounds of it this woman needed another rescue. Curious, now that he had noted she was not in immediate danger, he wondered what was in the box to make her still be screaming her fool head off. Cautiously he crossed over the doorstep. “Unusual mail today?”
Startled, the woman stopped screaming and looked at the stranger. By the way her eyes bulged and her mouth opened, he could see she was just about to go into hysterics again at his mere presence when he announced, “Just here to help.” He peered into the box at her feet and almost shrieked himself. What the hell was that thing? All it looked like was a bunch of mangled, bloody fur.
“Interesting. What is it?”
“If I knew I wouldn’t be screaming! But I’m not about to touch it, whatever it is.”
“Hmm… First strange delivery you’ve gotten, I take it,” Joshua mused. “Well, the first thing we have to do is figure out what it is. If your female sensibilities can’t take it, or if you plan to burst my eardrums with another screaming episode, don’t watch.”
Figuring he’d given her enough warning, he reached down into the box and tried to find a furry spot not matted with blood. As he lifted the thing out of the box a bit, he realized how heavy it was. How did this petite woman even get the box in her apartment?
Lifting from one end he was able to see the thing’s face. Well, what was left of a possible face. It had the appearance of road kill that had laid dead in the road awhile before someone rescued the corpse. As he was about to drop it in absolute disgust, he noticed a white envelope tucked into the side of the box.
